Atheist, How do explain exceptionaly intelligent people who believe in the supernatural and God ?

I ask this because you almost all of these people held spiritual beliefs and many practised a religion. The scientist Marie and Pierre Curie who discovered x-rays and Newton who discovered gravity had an acknowledged belief in the supernatural. Newton wrote books about it, and the Curies participated in experiments concerning the supernatural. Mendel who discovered inherited traits was a monk and so was Copernicus who developed the idea of the sun being at the centre of the Universe. Do you think you know better than then.
