What is a good guitar exercise to teach people to play guitar?

whenever i was taking lessons i got so mad when all my teacher wanted to tell me to do was chords and scales...endlessly , dont overlook the use of TAB because thats what 99% of guitarists use and hardly any guitar teachers use it and actually teach your students some actually songs dont just teach them chords
