Why did liberal California ban affirmative action?

They were bound to get one thing right eventually. People should not be discriminated against, nor should the be given preferential treatment because of race, ethnic background, etc. Although most of the major cities in California have a liberal majority, let's not call the whole state wall to wall liberal, because it is not. Just go to places like Fresno, Bakersfield, or Yuba City/Marysville you won't see a lot of liberals there.
